INTENT

At Cullercoats Primary School, our Geography curriculum helps children understand the world around them and their place within it. We want pupils to be curious, knowledgeable, and respectful of different places, people, and environments.

Our aims are for pupils to:

  • Know about their local area and how it connects to the wider world.

  • Understand key geographical concepts, such as location, maps, weather, and physical and human features.

  • Ask questions and investigate, developing skills to observe, compare, and explain geographical patterns.

  • Use maps, atlases, and digital tools confidently to find and present information.

  • Appreciate diversity, learning about different cultures, landscapes, and environments.

  • Think about sustainability, understanding how people interact with and care for the planet.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Geography and is designed to build knowledge step by step from EYFS to Year 6. It is enriched with local studies, outdoor learning, and real-world experiences to make learning meaningful and exciting.

IMPLEMENTATION

We teach Geography through well-planned units that build skills and knowledge progressively across Key Stage 1 and 2.

How we teach Geography:

  • Practical and hands-on learning: Fieldwork, map reading, and outdoor investigations are central to our approach.

  • Local links: We use our unique coastal location to study beaches, cliffs, and the impact of the sea on our community.

  • Trips and experiences: Visits to local landmarks, museums, and natural environments help pupils see geography in action.

  • Cross-curricular links: Geography connects with subjects like Science, History, Maths and English to deepen understanding.

  • Use of technology: Digital maps and online resources support pupils in exploring global geography.

Curriculum Design:

  • Long-term plans show how knowledge and skills progress from EYFS to Year 6.

  • Medium-term plans include enquiry questions, vocabulary, and opportunities for fieldwork.

  • Lessons include discussion, observation, and practical tasks to develop geographical thinking.

Teaching Strategies:

  • Teachers model how to use maps and interpret geographical data.

  • Pupils work collaboratively to explore ideas and share findings.

  • Vocabulary is taught explicitly to help pupils describe and explain geographical features.

Assessment:

  • Teachers use questioning, observation, and pupil work to check understanding.

  • End-of-unit tasks allow pupils to show what they have learned through maps, reports, or presentations.

  • Moderation across year groups ensures consistency and accuracy.

IMPACT

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Cullercoats Primary School will:

  • Have a strong understanding of their local area and how it relates to the UK and the wider world.

  • Use maps, atlases, and digital tools confidently.

  • Explain physical and human features and how they change over time.

  • Show curiosity and respect for different places and cultures.

  • Be prepared for the next stage of learning in Geography at secondary school.

Evidence of Impact:

  • High-quality work in books and displays.

  • Pupil voice showing enjoyment and engagement in Geography.

  • Successful fieldwork and enquiry projects.

  • Consistent progress across all year groups.

This Intent, Implementation, and Impact statement underpins our Geography curriculum and ensures it is ambitious, inclusive, and aligned with national expectations.
